Is the EBC + Island Peak Challenge Right For You?

Discover if this adventure is right for you

Fitness level

Couch potatoUltra-runner
• Expect 5-8 h trekking daily and a 10-h summit push. • Steady cardio training + leg strength required.

Creature comforts

Happy camperHotel lover
• Twin teahouse rooms most nights, one night under canvas. • Shared loos above Namche, hot showers optional extras.

Technical spice

Just walkingIce tools
• Non-vertical trekking to EBC, then crampons, fixed ropes and ascender on Island Peak’s headwall. • Guides teach everything you need. No technical experience required.

Altitude exposure

Sea-level loungerThin-air addict
• Sleep above 5 000 m for two nights and top out at 6 187 m. • Smart acclimatisation days built in.
How to Prepare
Start training at least 12 weeks out. Aim for 4–5 cardio sessions a week – hill reps, stair machine or weighted hikes building to 1 000 m ascent over 6 hrs. Add two strength circuits focused on quads, glutes and core. Break in waterproof boots early and practise with an 8–10 kg day-pack. Schedule one weekend back-to-back hike to mimic consecutive trail days. Get a medical check-up; discuss Diamox. Up your hydration habit to 3 L/day. Sort insurance that covers 6 500 m helicopter rescue, arrange Nepal visa photos, and stash spare cash for tips. Pack layers rated to –20 °C, leaving city clothes in KTM storage. Finally, expect basic loos, alpine starts and a dose of type-2 fun – the summit grin is worth it.

What might put you off (but shouldn’t)

• Thin air is real – but two acclimatisation hikes and daily O₂ checks keep headaches at bay.
• Summit day is huge – yet your Sherpa team fixes the ropes and coaches every step.
• Teahouse loos get rustic – carry sanitizer, embrace the simplicity and focus on those sunrise views.

Safety first
Guides carry oximeters, radios and first-aid; helicopter rescue protocol in place and mandatory insurance keeps you covered.
