Why This Trip is Special

Here are a few reasons why you'll love this adventure as much as we do

The ‘this is Iceland’ trail

The ‘this is Iceland’ trail

Four days linking everything you picture when you think of Iceland: steaming valleys, colourful rhyolite peaks, black sand deserts and glacier‑cut canyons – all joined up in one logical line.

Serious trek, still feels doable

Serious trek, still feels doable

Long days, a pack on your back and real weather, but no ropes or scrambling. Huts, waymarked trails and a steady stream of trekkers make it feel like a proper expedition that normal, fit humans can actually complete.

Huts, hot food and a roof in wild weather

Huts, hot food and a roof in wild weather

You carry your own kit, but not your house. Heated huts, kitchens and shared dorms turn apocalyptic forecasts into something you can ride out with dry socks and a hot drink, instead of a collapsed tent.

Day: 1

Reykjavík – Landmannalaugar: hot springs and first steps

Meet your guide and group at Reykjavík's bus terminal and jump on the highland bus towards the interior. As the road turns to rough track you pass the flanks of Hekla and thread between old lava flows until the colours of Landmannalaugar appear – steam vents, striped hills and a natural hot pool. After lunch you shoulder your pack and head south into the mountains, past small gorges, bubbling vents and the first snow patches. A steady climb brings you to Hrafntinnusker hut on a high plateau of obsidian and snow – exposed, otherworldly and a long way from the ring road. Distance: 12 km (7.5 mi), 4–5 hrs, Ascent ~470 m

Bus into the Highlands

Early meet at BSI and public bus into the Highlands via Hekla.

Explore Landmannalaugar

Arrive in Landmannalaugar and see the geothermal area and hot spring.

First steps on the trail

Afternoon hike south past steam vents and colourful ridges.

High plateau hut

Reach Hrafntinnusker hut on the plateau for the night.

What travelers say about Jón

Just finished the Laugavegur Trek—an unforgettable experience! The landscapes were incredible, and our guide, Jon, was outstanding: knowledgeable, and patient. Highly recommend both the trek and Jon.

This was a great trek!! The scenery was wonderful! Because of the wind and rain, I was so glad to have a warm hut and great meals to enjoy every night. Jon was our guide and he was excellent!! He was very knowledgeable and explained Iceland and volcanic history along with the many land formations we saw along the trek. Jon was fun, personable, and made the trek most enjoyable. He also was very aware of different hiking abilities and made sure everyone was safely through any areas they were not entirely comfortable with. I would highly recommend Jon as a guide to anyone considering this trek.

Where You'll Stay

Comfortable accommodations that enhance your adventure

Laugavegur mountain huts (Hrafntinnusker to Þórsmörk)

Mountain huts (shared dorms)

Heated, dorm‑style huts spaced along the trail, with bunk rooms, shared kitchens and cold running water. Some have basic showers for a small local fee; others are more spartan with long‑drop toilets and no hot water. Expect simple, sociable places to cook, dry kit and sleep, not hotel‑level comfort.

Shared dorm rooms
Heated communal areas
Fully equipped self‑catering kitchens
Cold running water in all huts
Basic showers in some huts (paid locally)
No private rooms
Note:Bring earplugs, an eye mask and a warm but packable sleeping bag – comfort comes from preparation, not luxury.

Who Travels With Us

Your Laugavegur Trail (Huts) Team

Big‑landscape hunters

Four days, four different worlds

You want the ‘am I still on Earth?’ feeling: rainbow hills one day, black sand and snow the next, finishing in a green birch valley. Laugavegur is the one trail people still talk about years later.

Confident hikers levelling up

4–7 hours walking a day

You’ve done decent day hikes or a shorter trek and now want something that feels like a real step up – point‑to‑point, carrying your own gear, but still on a marked trail with huts and wardens if things get rough.

Hut‑curious, tent‑reluctant trekkers

Roof, bunk, shared kitchen

You like the idea of a multi‑day trail but not wrestling a tent in a storm. Huts give you four walls, a warm sleeping platform and a stove to dry your kit, while still feeling a long way from civilisation.

Weather‑realistic adventurers

Type‑2 fun welcome

You know you’re buying a bit of a weather lottery ticket. If you’re happy to pull on proper waterproofs, trust local advice and accept that ‘glorious’ can include rain and sleet, you’re in the right place.

I went on the 5-Day Laugavegur Trek with the guides and it was truly an unforgettable experience! We hiked through breathtaking landscapes that were different every single day, and the whole trip was very well organized from start to finish. Our guide Greta was absolutely wonderful! She was so lovely, funny, and caring, always making sure everyone felt comfortable, included, and well fed. Her enthusiasm for Icelandic nature was contagious, and thanks to her, the group quickly felt like a little family. She also brought so much knowledge, inspiration, and humor to the trek, which made the long hiking days fly by. For those who still had energy left, she also had suggestions for extra hikes near the huts, which were a fantastic way to explore even more! I can wholeheartedly recommend this trek to anyone who loves hiking and wants to get to know the beautiful nature of Laugavegur.

Is the Laugavegur Trail (Huts) Challenge Right For You?

Discover if this adventure is right for you

Physical effort

Good base fitnessSolid multi‑day legs

Four full hiking days back‑to‑back, carrying your own kit, including one 19 km day and some steady climbs and descents. If you’re already comfortable on 5–7 hour UK hill days and can string a few of them together, you’re in the right range. If that sounds like a big jump from where you are now, you may want more time to prepare.

Experience level

Couch potatoMountain goat

The trail is waymarked and there’s no scrambling or rope work, but you will deal with uneven ground, snow patches early season, glacial streams and occasionally poor visibility. Previous hillwalking or trekking experience makes a big difference to how relaxed you feel. If this is your very first time in the mountains, it’s a steep learning curve.

Comfort & hut life

I'll sleep anywhereI need plush digs

Four nights in shared dorms with strangers, basic toilets, limited or no showers and no private space beyond your bunk. If you absolutely need your own room and silence to sleep, this will be hard work. If you can handle a bit of noise in exchange for warmth, shelter and a great atmosphere, you’ll be fine.

Weather mindset

It's blueskies or nothingNo such thing as bad weather...

You’re signing up for one of the world’s great trails in a place where two days of sideways rain is a perfectly normal forecast. If you need blue skies to enjoy yourself, there’s a real chance of disappointment. If you can see value in a ‘glorious’ day that includes sleet, wind and low cloud – as long as it’s managed safely – this is your kind of trip.

How to Prepare
Aim to be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day with a backpack on uneven, sometimes boggy or snowy ground. In the weeks before the trip, stack a few hill days back‑to‑back so you know how it feels to go again on tired legs. Break in your boots properly, practise walking with your pack loaded, and make sure your waterproofs are genuinely waterproof – Laugavegur is famous for both its scenery and its sideways rain.

Worried about weather, river crossings and crowded huts?

Booking Laugavegur huts months in advance can feel like buying a weather lottery ticket. Some years you get four days of crisp views; other years you get sideways rain and low cloud. We plan this as a proper trek, not a fair‑weather stroll: you come with decent waterproofs and warm layers, and your guide makes decisions day by day based on real conditions on the ground rather than wishful thinking.

Glacial river crossings look intimidating on YouTube, especially if you’ve never done one. On this trip you’ll be shown how to cross safely – when to undo your hip‑belt, how to pick a line, and when to wait or link up with others. You use bridges where they exist, wade only where it’s sensible, and if levels are too high the plan changes. Cold feet for a few minutes, not a heroic swim.

Laugavegur huts are not luxury: think 20–30 people in a dorm, snoring, rustling and midnight toilet trips included. Earplugs, an eye mask and a good sleeping bag solve most of it. In return you get a dry place to cook, a mattress, somewhere to hang wet kit and, in some huts, a hot shower for a few coins – which is a very different prospect to digging out bent tent poles in a gale at Álftavatn.

Safety‑first, weather‑honest
We can’t control Iceland’s forecasts, but we can control preparation, decision‑making and group support. You bring the legs; we’ll help with the judgement.

What our adventurers say

Trip of a lifetime, sharing beautiful scenery, navigating terrain challenges with smiling faces, huts and warm cooked meals at the end of each day. Key to our success was guide Greta, who led us with unfailing confidence and tremendous humor & heart. The trek is not for wimps. Days are long. Slopes can be steep. River crossing are truly something else. Sense of accomplishment is unmatched. Highly recommend.

Our group had a fantastic time with Þóra! Her guiding skills made the trek fun for all of us. We ate lunch in beautiful places, navigated river crossings with laughter and greatly enjoyed ourselves thanks to her expertise. Our guide was one of the best parts of the trip!
