Why This Trip is Special

Here are a few reasons why you'll love this adventure as much as we do

Charles Kuonen suspension bridge stretching into the distance above pine forest with snow-capped peaks

Cross the Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge in the Alps

The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge stretches 494 metres across a deep valley, swaying gently as you cross with nothing but mountain air beneath your feet. It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments you'll be telling everyone about for years.

Hikers celebrating at an alpine lake with the Matterhorn reflected in crystal-clear water

The Matterhorn from Every Angle

Day 3 delivers your first jaw-on-the-floor Matterhorn views, and Day 4's Five Lakes Trail gives you the iconic reflection shot. You'll see Switzerland's most famous peak from alpine meadows, mountain lakes, and your breakfast table.

Proper Mountain Hut Experience

Sleep in Swiss mountain huts perched on ridgelines, eat hearty dinners cooked by hut wardens, and wake up to views that most people only see in postcards. This is the real Swiss Alps, not a hotel lobby.

Day: 1

Randa to Europa Hut

Your adventure starts in the village of Randa, deep in the Mattertal valley. From here, you'll climb steeply through shaded pine forest, gaining altitude quickly as the valley floor drops away beneath you. The trail is well-marked but honest - 930 metres of climbing in about 4 hours will get your legs properly introduced to the Swiss Alps. As you break through the treeline, the panorama opens up dramatically. The Europa Hut sits perched at 2,260 metres with views that make the climb worth every step. Settle in, grab a cold drink on the terrace, and watch the sun set over the Mischabel range. Dinner is served communally - expect hearty mountain food and good company.

What travelers say about Tom

I did the Tour du mont Blanc highlights in July and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a perfect trip to experience the Alps if you are time limited or want a taster before the full TMB route. The scenery is breathtaking.

Is the Matterhorn Highlights Challenge Right For You?

Discover if this adventure is right for you

Fitness Level

Couch potatoUltra runner

You should be comfortable walking 6-8 hours a day with a daypack. Regular hill walks or gym cardio for 6-8 weeks beforehand will have you well prepared.

Adventure Experience

First timerExpedition veteran

No prior trekking experience required. If you've done day hikes before, you're already ahead of the curve. Your guide handles all the navigation and logistics.

Comfort Level

Five-star hotelsBivvy bag

Mountain huts are basic but cosy. You'll sleep in dorms, share facilities, and eat communal meals. It's part of the charm -- but if you need a private bathroom, this isn't for you.

Heights Tolerance

Vertigo-proneCliff-hanger

The suspension bridge is 85 metres above the valley floor and the Europaweg has some exposed sections. You don't need to love heights, but you do need to be OK with them.

Budget

ShoestringLuxury

At £749 for 4 days with accommodation, guides, and meals included, this is outstanding value compared to hotel-based alternatives at £2,200+. Budget for travel to Switzerland and lunches on the trail.

How to Prepare
Start training 6-8 weeks before your trip. Focus on building endurance with regular walks of 4-6 hours, ideally with some hills and a loaded daypack. If you have access to mountains or big hills, get out on them as often as you can - the Lake District, Snowdonia, or the Scottish Highlands are ideal training grounds. Work on your cardio with brisk walking, running, cycling, or swimming 3-4 times a week. Add stair climbing or step-ups to build the leg strength you'll need for the steep ascents. Break in your walking boots before the trip - blisters on Day 1 will make the rest of the week miserable. Do at least two full-day walks in the boots you'll be wearing. Practise walking with your packed daypack to get used to the weight. You'll only carry what you need for the day (waterproofs, water, snacks, camera), but it makes a difference over 7 hours. The altitude on this trek reaches around 2,800m - not high enough to cause serious altitude sickness, but you may feel slightly breathless on steep sections. General fitness is the best preparation.

Worried about fitness?

Let's be honest: this trek involves some proper climbing. Day 1 alone is 930 metres of ascent, and Day 3 covers 13.6 kilometres. But here's the thing - you don't need to be a fell runner or a gym fanatic to do this.

This is rated Moderate difficulty. The trails are well-maintained and your guide sets a pace that works for the group. If you can comfortably walk 6-8 hours with a day pack, handle some steep uphill sections, and don't mind the odd bit of exposure on narrow trails, you'll be absolutely fine.

Most of our guests aren't professional athletes - they're regular people who like a good challenge and want to see something extraordinary. Start training 6-8 weeks before your trip with regular hill walks and you'll turn up feeling ready for it.

No mountaineering experience needed
This is a hiking trek, not a climb. You don't need ropes, crampons, or any technical skills. Just a decent pair of boots and a willingness to put one foot in front of the other.

What our adventurers say

We had the most incredible 4 days hiking the TMB . The organisation and guiding was first class . We had a few of our party that needed to have a break of a day but every effort was made to get them to rejoin on the last day which was great customer care . My birthday fell on a day during the hike and Tom met us at the top of the mountain with a birthday cake !! Just brilliant ! Thank you
