Reykjavík – Thorsmork: into the glacier valley
Meet your guide and group at Reykjavík’s bus terminal bright and early, then jump on the highland bus towards the south coast. After passing small towns and waterfalls, the road turns rough and the vehicle starts wading the famous Krossá and neighbouring rivers – the only way into Thorsmork. You hop off at the Básar hut, your base for the next three nights. After lunch you head out on a first warm‑up walk to Álfakirkja (“the elves’ church”) and either into the Hvannárgil valley or up Réttarfell for a first taste of the views, before returning to the hut for dinner. Hike 5–8 km (3–5 mi), 3–4 hrs, Ascent/descent ~400 m.

What travelers say about Jón
Just finished the Laugavegur Trek—an unforgettable experience! The landscapes were incredible, and our guide, Jon, was outstanding: knowledgeable, and patient. Highly recommend both the trek and Jon.
Katherine M
This was a great trek!! The scenery was wonderful! Because of the wind and rain, I was so glad to have a warm hut and great meals to enjoy every night. Jon was our guide and he was excellent!! He was very knowledgeable and explained Iceland and volcanic history along with the many land formations we saw along the trek. Jon was fun, personable, and made the trek most enjoyable. He also was very aware of different hiking abilities and made sure everyone was safely through any areas they were not entirely comfortable with. I would highly recommend Jon as a guide to anyone considering this trek.

Who Travels With Us
Your Thorsmork Glacier Valley Trek Team
Basecamp lovers who still want a challenge
You like the idea of big days out, but prefer coming back to the same hut each night rather than moving on every day.
First‑time wild Iceland trekkers
Ideal as a first proper Iceland trek if you want real landscapes and some big climbs without committing to a point‑to‑point journey.
Ridge‑and‑view addicts
If standing on high ground looking down into glacier valleys is your thing, this ticks a lot of boxes in four days.
Weather‑wary but up for it
You’re realistic about Iceland’s weather, but like knowing you can dry out in the same warm hut each night rather than chasing a moving camp.
Thorsmork and Beyond Hiking Tour... We only had 7 people in our group. We cooked and ate breakfast and dinners together in the amazing Basar hut kitchen. Slept in hostel type of bedrooms. Great lunches on the trail. Our guide was great – friendly and knowledgeable and always ready to pull out big posters on birds and plants to teach us about Iceland! And what a location. I feel like I could go back and do my own hiking trips as we explored a lot of different areas during our 4 days!

Is the Thorsmork Glacier Valley Trek Challenge Right For You?
Discover if this adventure is right for you
Physical challenge
Three days of 5–7 hours on your feet, including one big day with around 1,000 m of ascent. You don’t need to be an ultra‑runner, but you should already be happy on longer UK hill days and able to go again when you’re a bit tired.
Experience required
You don’t need ropes, crampons or scrambling experience, but a bit of prior hillwalking makes a big difference to how much you enjoy it. Paths can be rough, steep and sometimes airy on the ridges, so it’s best if this isn’t your very first time in the hills.
Comfort & hut life
Three nights in a shared mountain hut: bunks, shared bathrooms, simple showers and a busy communal room. If you’re happy to trade privacy and hotel frills for location, warmth and sociable evenings, you’ll be fine. Earplugs and an eye mask help light sleepers.
Weather & headspace
This is Iceland, so you should expect wind, rain and cloud as well as clear spells. If your enjoyment depends on blue skies, it might frustrate you; if you’re happy to put good waterproofs on and trust the guides to tweak the plan as needed, it’s a good fit.
Worried about river crossings, huts and the weather?
Getting into Thorsmork is part of the appeal – you cross braided rivers in big highland buses and 4x4 vehicles rather than trying to drive in yourself. On foot, you use bridges where needed rather than wading glacial torrents. It feels adventurous without asking you to do anything reckless.
You stay three nights in the same heated hut, so you quickly get used to the set‑up: shared dorms, simple bunks, a busy common room and a warm stove. Earplugs and an eye mask help, and most people relax as soon as they realise it’s clean, dry and sociable rather than chaotic.
Weather‑wise, this is still “real” Iceland. Guides watch conditions closely and tweak start times, distances or routes if needed. You bring decent boots and waterproofs; they bring the experience to decide when to push on and when to change plan.
